The Fairtrade foundation was formed in 1992 by the unification of several charities that had delved into this area. The first certified Fairtrade product was Green & Black’s Maya Gold Chocolate made using cocoa from Belize.
Fairtrade products have increased since that first nearly 20 years ago. As the movement towards ethical trading gains momentum and consumers become more conscious of their products choices particularly when buying food, more companies are introducing fair-trade products in to their range, while others like Green & Blacks that have built their business around producing fair-trade products are booming and have an ever expanding range of Fairtrade products.
So why, as a recruitment agency are we interested in Fairtrade Fortnight?
As a niche recruiter, Network has a large Food & Drink sector division. We are speaking to a range of people within the industry everyday and as such we have a deep understanding of the influences both economic and social that drives our clients businesses. Fairtrade covers both aspects.
While the market in general has been affected by the down turn and many shoppers have turned to value products there has be a substantial number of people that have stuck to their values and continued to shop ethically. As such, £799million was spent on fairtrade goods in the UK in 2009 and was the favourite ethical choice for UK shoppers.
With continued sales growth of over 12% year on year, we believe that Fairtrade is a sector that many of our Food & Drink clients would be interested in. On this page you will find links to the Fairtrade Foundation’s website where you can find more out about fairtrade Fortnight and the foundation.
Network continues to support our clients by understanding their markets and the influences affecting their businesses.
